Peter Ryan
Untangling Complex Trauma
Hello, my name is Peter and I promote therapeutic growth by championing the embrace of vulnerability.
I do so within a subjectively safe, active listening environment, anchored in the here and now.
I work with adults who experience life difficulties usually stemming from various forms of trauma, including childhood abuse.
With 15 years in-person empathetic experience processing complex trauma and over 8 years doing so online/phone, you can have confidence in my therapeutic credentials.

About me and my practice
"Beneath every behaviour there is a feeling. And beneath each feeling there is a need. And when we meet that need rather than focus on the behaviour, we begin to deal with the cause, not the symptom." (Ashleigh Warner)
I am a registered BACP Therapeutic Counsellor MBACP (Accred) abiding by their Ethical Framework. Qualified in 2008, I earned my accreditation in 2019, which recognises my capacity for independent, ethical and competent practice. It also demonstrates that I have achieved high standards of therapeutic knowledge, experience and development.
My preferred modality is the Person-Centered Approach (PCA) to counselling because its organismic and relational aspects resonate deeply with me. As phrased by Keith Tudor and Mike Worral, person-centred practice is, in its nature, organic rather than mechanical, seminal rather than technical.
What I am particular drawn to in PCA is the egalitarian manner it promotes towards the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist. It values clients expertise on their own experiences, perceptions, feelings and emotions in the counselling process where a therapist does not ever use the advantage of being professionally trained to presume or impose outcomes.
It is extremely important to me that I practise within a disciplined format of accountability, functioning boundaries and ethical obligations, while championing freedom, creativity and maintaining a non-judgemental stance.
